Instant Runoff Voting (IRV).
The diagram illustrates an election with ten ballots. If held using First past the post ballots, without strategic voting, the first choices count up just like the X's in a First Post the Post election. Candidate "A" wins with 4 votes. That's a plurality, apparently good enough for all of us ... but not so much for political parties when they select their leaders and candidates.
