Democracies around the world?

Majority rule? Not many! Not often.

Control of the agenda by the voters? Nowhere.

Democracy circa 1970 ... a form of government by the people based on majority rule and the concept of the equality of people. Of course there are conditions regarding citizenship and age of majority.

Democracy circa 1990, after the wall fell ... a form of government by the people through elected representatives.

I like the old definition. But that ship has sailed. Let's just say I'm in favour of a majoritarian democracy with individual rights and freedoms in concert with real individual equality when it comes to making group decisions. France had a great idea in 1789 with "liberty, equality and brotherhood". The masses would buy that. But just try doing it. It doesn't last long when times are hard. England and the empire settled for "Peace, Order and Good Government" (POGG). They don't even mention democracy. In Canada, we have some people in control, and lots of carelessly elected, well paid representatives of the people doing exactly what they are told to do by their parties. It's so Canadian. We have peace, order and government.
